Prayers can comfort those who are grieving. I prayed for his wife Barbara and their family while he lived and will continue to pray for them from this day forward. I prayed for him while he lived on this earth. I am thankful to have known this precious servant of the Lord. Yet, the news of his passing brought me to my knees. David had dealt with serious medical issues for a period of time. Recently, a dear friend of my husband and mine passed on to be with the Lord. A medical diagnosis that has been dealt with for years that has now been given no chance for recovery is another time prayers are needed. And that night I made a wish," Peg said, raising herself as if from a trance, "a foolish wish it were- that me and Jack might never be rescued. "You probably think such as me don't love so strong and tender, but I loved Jack Pierce like we was both put on earth just to find each other. So we were man and wife before God- and that's the truth." We took pleasure from each other's bodies, and I can tell you, mistress, he were no green youth, but all grown man. "When we lay down together in our grass house we whispered vows to stay true for ever and a day. She forced herself to continue with self-mocking gusto. Croxon returned with a glass of water, and Peg drank greedily. All them love stories, all them ballads that you always thought were a load of old tripe- love has found you out, and here you are. So that's settled." And she'd thought to herself, so this is it, girl. "I see past your always acting the tough girl," he insisted with boyish stubbornness. His blue eyes had met hers like a beacon shining on her naked soul. He had looked down so gently on her pitiful self on her bruises and her bony body dressed in salt-hard rags. Peg stared into space, again seeing Jack's face, so fierce and true. Croxon murmured that Peg might be released from her pose. The rest of her tale stuck in her throat like a fishbone. "He said he thanked God for the day he met me." Peg's eyes brimmed full she was as weak as water. "He loved me like his own breath," she said, in a voice that was dangerously plaintive. Aye, she had loved him- a damned sight more than this woman could ever know. Peg fought a choking feeling in her chest. "You loved him," her mistress said softly, as her pencil resumed its hissing across the paper. For entertainment we even had Jack's penny whistle. I roasted fish and winkles in the embers. We had lost the compass in the water, but didn't lament it. We had fat birds that Jack snared for our dinner, and made fire using a shard of looking glass I found in my pocket. Our home was a hut made of branches thatched with flat leaves, a right cozy place to sleep in. Next we made a better camp beside a river and had ourselves a pretty bathing pool all bordered with ferns lovely it was, with marvelous red parrots chasing through the trees. We watched the sun set like a peach on the sea, making plans on how we might live till a ship called by. “He'd found a sweet-water stream that I drank from, and for dinner we found winkles that we ate baked on stones. Life on the Edge: The Next Generation's Guide to a Meaningful Future It is at this moment that an unexpected theological crisis presents itself.” Without warning, the membrane tears, and horror seeps into a person’s life or into the life of a loved one. Then, as years roll by, one day it happens. But most of them are shielded-and don’t realize it. Not every young person has this protection, of course, because children do die of cancer, congenital heart problems, and other disorders. As the immune system protects the human body from the unseen threat of harmful bacteria, so this mythical membrane guards them from life-threatening situations. They walk in it every day but are hardly aware of its presence. In his book Letters to a Young Doctor, he said that most young people seem to be protected for a time by an imaginary membrane that shields them from horror. He writes the most beautiful and compassionate descriptions of his patients and the human dramas they confront. Richard Selzer is a surgeon and a favorite author of mine.
